Well what is there to say when it seems like the world is falling down and there is no clear path to an agreeable future?
Most if not all of what is currently going on is completely out of our control, not to mention the majority of people.
This situation, where a very small number of people control a very large number of other people, seems fairly typical and representative of, like, businesses and such, but on a much smaller scale of numbers and level of influence.
Governments wield enormous power over others that we usually take misfeasance very seriously. People in power are held to account. Sometimes they are voted out, rarely it seems like the long arm of the law removes them from office.
So, how can we achieve harmony when it feels like the world has gone nuts?
Clearly, to me anyway, during times like these the best option is to check in with others and confirm that we are all more or less powerless to control the situation. Recognizing that is important. We have no choice but to trust our leaders to do the job we elected them to do.
In the meantime, we are not completely powerless. Each day we are faced with small choices that we may not even recognize as choices. Going to the grocery store. Making a major purchase for the home or family. How to relax from work.
By slowing down or pausing before making a decision of what to buy, we can confirm whether our preferred choices are consistent with and support our world view. Questioning ourselves at these moments is a way of confirming that nobody forces our hand and we actually do have agency.
Whether you are Canadian, American, or a member of any other country that feels the effects of wage disparity and the capitalist system that grinds human happiness like a machine, we can all pull together and achieve the kind of sustainable and positive economic relationship with each other that we truly believe in our hearts is possible.
To give up is not an option. Try to avoid getting pulled into political debates (unless you really like conflict!) because aside from voting and sending letters full of impotent rage we don’t have many options to deal with the situation.
Except for our buying decisions. It’s power. Use it.
